Eduardo Figueira

Biographical note

Eduardo Figueira is a full professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Education and Administration (FCSEA) of the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technology (ULHT) located in Lisbon where he has taught curricular units in the domains of research methods and data analysis for the social sciences (Masters in Sociology, in Tourism and in Sociology and Economy of Work), social economy (Master in Social Work), sociology theories, planning and project management, research practices for sociology, local and regional dynamics, sustainable development and environment (Sociology degree ) and demography (Social Work degree). As part of his research activities he has served as Director of the Center for Research and Social Studies (CPES) of FCSEA which has been submitted (2014) to assessment of the Portuguese Foundation for the Science and Technology (FCT).

He has got the Degree in Agronomy (1974) from the University of Luanda, Angola, and obtained the MSc degree (1984) and PhD degree (1987) in Continuing and Vocational Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA and the degree of aggregation (2005) in Rural Extension from the University of Évora.

He retired from the civil service in October 2008 as associate professor with aggregation in the fields of Rural Extension and Vocational Education & Training (VET) playing on moment of retirement, in addition to teaching, research and community service in the Department of Sociology of the University of Évora, Chairman functions for the Department Council to which  was elected in July 2005 and re-elected in July 2007 for the 2007/09 biennium. At the University of Évora he has also served as Vice-Rector for Administration and Extension University between 1995 and 1998 and Pro-Rector for Continuing Education in 1994. He has played in 1994/95 and in 2007/8, the functions of Director for the Master Of Science Program in Sociology and for the Center of Research in Sociology and Anthropology, Augusto da Silva (CISA-AS).

During his professional life as professor and researcher (ULHT and University of Évora) has been concerned with the Rural Development issues which led him to engage in the promotion of sustainable local development in the Alentejo under the Community Initiative Programme LEADER. In this line of work and concerns, he has promoted the foundation of ALIENDE, Association for Local Development of which is Chairman of the Board of Directors since its foundation and, in this quality, he was one of the promoters and founders of MONTE-Development of Central Alentejo, ACE. He has been, since its foundation, a member of the Administration Board of the MONTE consortium, having served several times as President. In this framework he has been, since December 2012 until July of 2016, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ANIMAR-Portuguese Association for Local Development. In line with his concerns on the sustainable development issues he has been involved in several cooperation projects in Portuguese-speaking world, namely Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, coordinating in this country the Sustainable Management of Forest Resources of the Natural Park of the Tarrafes of the Cacheu River (GSRF-PNTC) co-funded by the European Union and the Portuguese Camões Institute.


As part of his research activity, he has participated in several research projects funded by the European Union and the Portuguese State on social, learning sustainability, continuing vocational education and gender issues, at European, national and regional level.
