The 2nd International Congress was organised by the International Study Group for the Colonial Periodical Press of the Portuguese Empire (GIEIPC-IP), in partnership with the Orion Project – Portuguese Orientalism, with CHAM – Humanities Centre of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, NOVA University of Lisbon, and CEComp – Centre for Comparative Studies of the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon. This international event sought to “establish a bridge of understanding between […] [the] liberal debate in the press, existing at the time in which it took place, in its various ramifications at the level of the empire, and the representation of the same today”. The works presented were framed within the scope of the Portuguese empire – metropolitan press and/or the press of the colonies, and the communication proposals addressed diversified themes, such as “the anti-colonial struggles in the periodic press (19th century); the debate on nation and nationalism in the colonial space (19th century); the appearance of the periodic press in the colonies; the reciprocal influence between the colonial presses of different empires; individual rights and public space in the colonial press (19th century)”.

The 2nd International Congress of GIEIPC-IP counted with the participation of guest speakers and researchers and professors from the Pedagogical University of Maputo, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, NOVA University of Lisbon, ISCED – Higher Institute of Educational Sciences of Luanda, and ICS – Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, the Federal University of Rio Grande, International University of Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony University of São Paulo, Portuguese Catholic University, Goa University and Paulista State University.

As part of the internationalization strategy of CeiED/ULHT, promoted by its Director, Professor António Teodoro, through the promotion of research on education and development and the participation of CeiED in regional and global networks, the researchers Arlinda Cabral, who coordinates ReLeCo Núcleo de Estudos Africanos – Educação e Sociedade, and José Viegas Brás and Maria Neves Gonçalves, who coordinate ReLeCo Cultura(s), Educação e Memória(s), presented their communication in the 1st panel of the Congress. They presented their communication in the 1st panel of the Congress, together with researchers and teachers from other higher education institutions.

This joint and interdisciplinary activity of ReLeCo NEA-ES and ReLeCo CEM materialized the integration of the study of the history of education in African countries, from the perspective of the Colonial Periodical Press, as an area of study of Educational Sciences. This first participation of CeiED researchers in this international Congress on Colonial Periodical Press allowed us to initiate a dialogue with the International Study Group of the Colonial Periodical Press of the Portuguese Empire, with a view to a greater participation of CeiED researchers in the next Congress on Colonial Periodical Press Studies of the Portuguese Empire.
