Abstract
The thesis seeks to establish the relationship between conservation/restoration and social museology, in the preservation of cultural heritage. In the prespective of the new museology, heritage (immaterial and material) constitutes a social, sentimental and historical value, which unites a group of people or a community around its heritage heritage and conceives a legacy for future generations. In this way it constitutes a value of memory. Conservation and restoration plays an important role in preserving this legacy by acting directly or indirectly on the objects that make up this same legacy. The new trends in the thinking of the theory and practice of conservation and restoration (they are distinct actions at different times), suggest that the decision or not to intervene should be taken starting from the individual who uses the object and not the object itself. When we ask ourselves what to restore and why to restore, the importance of the object does not start only or exclusively from its artistic value, but as an object that contains in itself personal or collective symbolic values, sign and symbol, relevant for those who own it and for those who use it. The treatment of the collections in museums of community nature should contemplate these two aspects and define intervention criteria capable and effective in their management and use of resources, sometimes scarce. The methodology to be followed for the development of the thesis will be developed on the one hand, in the various approaches to the concept of cultural heritage, in the concept of memory as a set of ideas and knowledge of a community or group and in its relationship with the community or society in which it is inserted. On the other hand, to think how conservation/restoration, looking for new theoretical approaches for its action and addressing different situations of collections, may contribute to establish standards for their management and preservation. To understand how we can accomplish what is intended in the thesis, the intention is to start from a case study, in this case the Museu Marítimo de Sesimbra, and analysing three simple issues such as, constitution of the collection, management and conservation and restoration policies. Through the results obtained, the thesis will follow the direction that is most relevant and contributes to understanding and improving the practices of conservation and restoration in its contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage, imbued with the spirit of Social Museology.
