1. Context and Introduction

The LIFE EduLab - Laboratory Innovation & Futures of Education is currently undergoing a major process of scientific and technological development through the establishment of a multidisciplinary STEAM+H (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics and Digital Humanities) laboratory.

This strategic investment is funded by the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and the European Union through NextGenerationEU, under the Equipar+2 - National Investment for the Reinforcement of Scientific Equipment in R&D Units.

Through this investment, CeiED - Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development strengthens its research infrastructure by creating an innovative laboratory dedicated to educational research, teacher education, digital transformation and interdisciplinary experimentation, reinforcing its scientific capacity in education, digital humanities and pedagogical innovation.

3. Project Description

LIFE EduLab is conceived as a living laboratory where research, education and technological innovation converge to address contemporary educational challenges.

Combining scientific inquiry, creativity, digital technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration, the laboratory will support research and teacher education in STEAM and Digital Humanities while serving undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Universidade Lusófona.

The laboratory provides an environment where researchers, teachers, students and external stakeholders collaboratively design, prototype and evaluate innovative educational solutions, ranging from artificial intelligence in education and robotics to climate education, data visualisation, digital archiving, experimental sciences, arts-based methodologies and digital storytelling.

Grounded in Open Science and the concept of education as a common good, LIFE EduLab promotes inclusion, diversity and sustainability while strengthening scientific literacy, critical thinking, creativity and ethical reflection.

Scientific and Technical Objectives

  • Strengthen CeiED's scientific and technological infrastructure.
  • Promote interdisciplinary research in STEAM and Digital Humanities.
  • Support innovative pedagogical experimentation.

5. Research Infrastructure & Equipment Overview

LIFE EduLab integrates two fully equipped multidisciplinary laboratory rooms and one technical support room designed to promote collaborative research and innovative teaching methodologies.

The infrastructure combines:

  • modular laboratory furniture;
  • scientific workbenches;
  • washing stations;
  • interactive digital walls;
  • large-format interactive displays;
  • collaborative workspaces;
  • laptops;
  • high-speed Wi-Fi and digital infrastructure;
  • scientific equipment for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geology;
  • robotics and computational thinking kits.

Together, these facilities create a flexible environment capable of supporting active learning, interdisciplinary experimentation, educational research and teacher professional development.
