2nd Cycle - PhD Supervisors' Debate Series – CeiED

The Citizen Science Doctoral College in CeiED is organizing another cycle of debates on various aspects of doctoral supervision. This 2nd edition will take place bimonthly between February and June 2024.

Objective: The aim of this edition of the debate series is to provide support and inspiration to doctoral supervisors in developing supervision skills and advancing their doctoral candidates. Thus, it aims to promote excellence in doctoral supervision.

Focus topics: This year's focus is on offering 3 seminars on the following themes:

Equity, diversity, and inclusion in doctoral supervision

  • Date: March 21, 2024
  • Objective: Explore the importance of equity and diversity in doctoral studies, identifying barriers to inclusion and strategies to promote diversity and create inclusive environments in doctoral supervision.
  • Session Facilitator: Susana Pinto (UA)

Ethics in doctoral research and supervision

  • Date: April 18, 2024
  • Objective: Explore ethical issues related to doctoral research and supervision, including the ethical principles guiding doctoral research, common ethical dilemmas, ethical responsibilities of the supervisor, and academic integrity. This session will also address the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in doctoral research and the ethical issues and implications arising from this use.
  • Session Facilitator: Helena Moniz (University of Lisbon)

Professional development of supervisors: Who is it for and what needs does it address?

  • Date: June 20, 2024
  • Objective: Explore, from the perspective of supervisors, the importance of continuous professional development for supervisors, the perceived necessary skills, and who should be responsible for training.
  • Session Facilitator: Carolina Micaela Pereira (University of Lisbon, Institute of Education).

Seminar methodology: The seminars will be conducted online (via Zoom platform) and will follow a practical methodology, based on idea exchange, group discussions, practical workshops, and sharing of experiences and best practices.

Target audience and Certification: The initiative is aimed at all professors from Universidade Lusófona and the Lusófona Group, as well as those from other national higher education institutions. Interested participants must register in advance for each seminar. Attendance at the sessions will be certified as a whole (i.e., upon attendance at all 3 seminars), either by Universidade Lusófona as part of institutionally provided training, or by CeiED for external participants."
