Briefing on Digital Ethics in Social Sciences
9 december 2024
André Freitas, a researcher at CeiED, recently published a briefing on digital ethics in social sciences/education as part of his involvement in the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), an international network dedicated to research methodologies in the social sciences. The NCRM is promoted by the Universities of Southampton, Edinburgh, and Manchester.
The NCRM provides an extensive range of scientific and pedagogical resources for researchers and educators on various topics related to research methodologies in the social sciences. Robert Meckin and Mark Elliot, from the University of Manchester and members of the NCRM leadership team, curate a section dedicated to Methods Futures. This section aims to explore topics/ factors, including technological advancements, that may impact social research. The goal is to support researchers and educators in anticipating change and developing strategically oriented methodological responses.
The briefing, Digital Ethics, by André Freitas and reviewed by Robert Meckin and Mark Elliot, reflects on potentially new dimensions regarding the application of digital ethics in the conceptualisation, design, and implementation of social science research, with a specific focus on the field of education. The document describes digital ethics and suggests possible developments that researchers may need to consider in the next few years. This informative document draws on recent literature and highlights resources related to aspects such as digital consent in research, digital data security and privacy, and digital equity and representational justice.
