Manuela is a professor and researcher at the Regional Secretariat for Education, Science and Technology of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. She is also a researcher at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon (FCSH-UNL) and a member and researcher at CIS-NOVA. Additionally, she is part of the International and Interdisciplinary Network on Inequalities, the Centre for Global Studies of the Universidade Aberta (CEG), and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Catholicism and Globalization (IEAC-GO). Between 2018 and December 2025, she served as a member and researcher at the Atlantic-Madeira Research Association (AICA), as well as at the Centre for Studies, Development, Culture and Social (CEDECS), where she carried out multiple research activities.

Regarding academic qualifications, she completed her Postdoctoral Fellowship in Education Sciences, with a specialization in Education, Society and Development, at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon in July 2025. She holds a PhD in Education Sciences, in the same specialization, from FCSH-UNL (2013). She earned a Master’s degree in Education Sciences, with a specialization in Pedagogical Supervision, from the University of Madeira (2003), and obtained her Bachelor's degree in Education Sciences from Almeida Garrett Higher School (2000). She also holds a Teaching Diploma (Primary Education), completed in Funchal, Madeira (1984).

From 2018 to 2025, she served as Vice-President of the Board of the Atlantic Scientific Research Association (AICA), where she was also a researcher and coordinator of the Department of Education Sciences. During the same period, she was Vice-President of the Assembly of CEDECS – Centre for Studies, Development, Culture and Social, while also maintaining research activity. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of Empreendipédia DEE and a member of AFIRSE at the Institute of Education of the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Lisbon.

Throughout her career, she has published numerous articles in national and international scientific journals, contributing as well to scientific peer review, coordination, communication and moderation in academic events. She is the author of several book chapters, conference proceedings and publications at regional, national and international levels, reinforcing her active role in the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of Education Sciences.
