António Nóvoa is Full Professor at the Institute of Education, University of Lisbon, since 1996 and Honorary Rector of the same Institution since 2014. António Nóvoa holds a PhD in Education from the University of Geneva in 1986. PhD in History from the University of Paris IV - Sorbonne in 2006. Doctor Honoris Causa by six universities in Portugal and Brazil. President of ISCHE - International Association for the History of Education, between 2000 and 2003. President of the Day of Portugal in 2012, at the invitation of the Portuguese President of the Republic. He received the University of Coimbra/Santander Prize in 2014. Consultant of the Minister of Education, in Brazil, in 2014. Director of the Initiative “Public Policies”, University of Lisbon, 2014-2015. Advisor of the Rector of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in 2017. Ambassador of Portugal at UNESCO (2018-2021). Member of the Council of State, Portuguese Republic, since 2022. Holder of the Chair “Anísio Teixeira”, in Teacher Education, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in 2022. Holder of the Chair UNESCO “Futures of education”, at the University of Lisbon, since 2023.

He has a wide international experience, particularly in European and American universities. He was Visiting Professor for a year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1993/1994) and at Columbia University - New York (2002). In 1995 he was Visiting Researcher at the University of Paris V. In 2001, he was Visiting Scholar at the University of Oxford. In the last forty years, he guided courses and graduate seminars (Masters and PhD) in the main Portuguese universities and in more than thirty foreign universities in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. At the international level, it is also worth registering the evaluation work accomplished at the invitation of European and international agencies, as well as scientific institutions in about a dozen countries. Throughout his life, he supervised hundreds of students (masters, doctorates and post-doctorates), held around a thousand public interventions and conferences and published around three hundred works. He was Rector of the Lisbon University between 2006 and 2013, promoting the merger of the two major public universities in Lisbon: the Lisbon University and the Technical University of Lisbon. His duties as Rector ended in 2013, with the creation of a new institution under the name of University of Lisbon (ULisboa). Throughout his career, he received several awards, decorations and distinctions, particularly at the academic level: Honoris Causa Doctorates by the University of Algarve (2015), the University of Brasilia (2015), the University Lusophone (2016), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2017), the Federal University of Santa Maria (2017), and the University of São Paulo (2020). His life and work have been the subject of biographies and academic works, especially in Brazil.
