I - Object and Scope

Job description

COFAC, Cooperativa de Formação e Animação Cultural CRL / Universidade Lusófona, hereby opens a call to recruit a Ph.D. researcher , corresponding to position 195 of the Research Career Statute, under the terms of the applicable legislation, with an open-ended employment contract, within the scope of the contract program between Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), and the above-mentioned Cooperative, supported by national funds inscribed in the budget of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) – and carried out at the Research Unit Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares em Educação e Desenvolvimento – CeiED.

1. Main Duties

The work to be carried out will be in Education, Territory, or Memory.

2. Contractual terms

  1. The position of Ph.D. researcher is made effective through an open-ended employment contract, whose FCT funding is for a maximum period of six years, under the terms of Decree-Law no. 57/2016, of 9 August, amended by Law no. 57/2017, of 19 July, and the Portuguese Labour Code.
  2. The tasks to be carried out in fulfillment of this position are those considered within the scope of the Research Unit - Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares em Educação e Desenvolvimento – CeiED (UID-4114).
  3. The contract to be made is scheduled to begin on February 2nd, 2026, and finish, predictably, on May 15th, 2028, or with the completion of the research project, preserving the term regime established by the Labour Code.
  4. The tasks comprehended in the object of the employment contract take place at Campo Grande 376, in Lisbon, or in such places deemed necessary to implement the research plan.
  5. The gross base monthly salary to be paid is €3,501.28, according to paragraph a) of no. 1 of article 15 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016, of 9 August, amended by Law no. 57/2017, and to the first remuneration position of the initial level as laid down in article 2 of Regulatory Decree no. 11-A/2017, of 29 December, corresponding to position 195 of the Research Career Statute, approved by Decree-Law no. 124/99, of 20 April.

II – Eligibility and Applications

Position to be filled and terms of the open call:

  1. The call aims to hire a Ph.D. researcher, with an open-ended employment contract.
  2. National, foreign, or stateless Ph.D. researchers may apply for the position.

Cumulative academic profile requirements

  1. Adequate background in one of the fields of CeiED – Education, Territory, or Museology;
  2. Ph.D. degree obtained more than five years ago, in one of the aforementioned scientific fields;
  3. Evidence of strong capacity to work in interdisciplinary environments, with organizationand teamwork skills;
  4. Leadership capacity demonstrated through scientific and financial management of funded projects;
  5. Up to five publications in leading international peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journals and/or in leading international peer-reviewed journals, proceedings, and/or monographs;
  6. Experience in participating in national and international scientific networks;
  7. Experience in coordinating national and international research projects using competitive funding;
  8. Invitations to national and international conferences and/or universities;
  9. Experience in community dissemination activities (scientific and non-scientific), through participation in national and international scientific events, organization of scientific events, and support for the dissemination of the project and its results;
  10. Experience in supervising doctoral and post-doctoral students;
  11. Fluency in Portuguese, written and spoken;
  12. Fluency in English. Proficiency in other non-Portuguese languages will be valued.

Recognition of foreign academic degrees:

In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, under the terms of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August, and to ensure equal treatment for candidates holding foreign and national academic degrees, it is mandatory to obtain recognition of said degrees and conversion of their respective final score to the Portuguese rating scale.

Recognition and conversion must be available by the deadline for submission of applications and may be requested from any public higher education institution or the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES, in the case of automatic recognition).   2. Publication of the procedure observes the provisions of article 11 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016, of 29 August, amended by Law no. 57/2017, of 19 July.

5. Deadline

The call will be open from 7 November 2025 until 5 pm (Lisbon time) on 12 December 2025.

6. How to apply

  1. Cover letter stating the motivations for the application, written in English;
  2. Curriculum vitae describing professional experience and including a list of scientific publications;
  3. Ph.D. certificate;
  4. Personal data and contact information, including email addresses of at least two leading academics who can attest to the submitted curriculum;
  5. Other documents considered relevant by the applicant to attest and assess their scientific and professional history.

6.2. Except for the elements mentioned in paragraph (e), failure to comply with any of the above requirements will result in immediate rejection of the application.

6.3. False statements made by applicants will be punished according to the law.

III – Jury

7. Jury Composition

The jury has five members nominated by the COFAC Board. In accordance with article 13 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016, of 29 August, amended by Law no. 57/2017, of 19 July, the following members were appointed:

  1. Chairman – Manuel José Damásio (Director of ILIND);
  2. António Duarte Teodoro (Director of CeiED);
  3. Elsa Bacala Estrela (Board Member);
  4. Alcina de Oliveira Martins (Board Member);
  5. Mário Caneva Moutinho (Board Member).

8. Competences 

8.1. The jury will evaluate the applications.

8.2. Minutes shall be taken for each meeting of the jury, including the issues discussed, the votes by each member, and the grounds for the decisions made.

9. Selection method

9.1. Applications admitted to the competition will be assessed based on the quality, compliance with deadlines and relevance of the scientific curriculum (scientific output and research experience suited to the strategic objectives of CeiED and the creation of newknowledge related to the CeiED Research and Learning Communities – ReLeCo), as well as the professional curriculum and adequacy to the proposed work plan.

9.2. In the first stage of the selection process, the jury will assess the elements listed below on a scale of 0 to 100:

  1. Scientific career, with particular emphasis on the last five years of work relevant to the competition (up to 35%);
  2. Professional experience in the last five years relevant to the work plan (up to 55%);
  3. Cover letter in English (10%), assessing motivation (5%) and English proficiency (5%);
  4. If interviews are conducted — for clarification purposes only — they will correspond to a maximum of 10% of the total evaluation and may involve up to five of the highest-ranked candidates. Only evaluations above 60% will be considered.
  5. If deemed necessary, the jury may request references from the academics listed in paragraph 6.1(d).

9.3. In the event of a tie, the final decision rests with the jury’s chairman.

9.4. After the selection stages are completed, the jury will draft, within no more than seven working days, minutes including the final decision, the ranking of applicants, their final scores, and a brief description of the recruitment, assessment, and selection process.

10. Prior Hearing

The jury’s final deliberation will be communicated to the interested parties, who will have ten working days to exercise their right to a prior hearing, in accordance with the Administrative Procedure Code.

11. Homologation

Once the deadline for the prior hearing has expired, the jury’s final decision is certified by the Chairperson of the Executive Committee of COFAC, CRL, who is also responsible for the hiring of the selected applicant.

12. Dissemination of results

The list of admitted and rejected applicants, as well as their final scores, will be posted at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (Avenida do Campo Grande, no. 376, Lisbon) and on the website www.ulusofona.pt . Applicants will also be notified by email.
