CeiED researcher contributes to international Routledge handbook on higher education
CeiED researcher Sónia Cardoso has co-authored a chapter with Sandra Santos, a researcher at the Research Centre on Education (CIEd), in The Routledge International Handbook of Learning and Instruction in University Education, published by Routledge in 2026 and edited by Auli Toom, Kirsi Pyhältö, Lynn McAlpine, and Jan van Tartwijk.
The volume brings together contributions from international scholars and provides a comprehensive and systematic synthesis of research on learning and instruction in higher education. Drawing on systematic literature reviews, it examines both the structural and institutional factors shaping university education and the practices of teaching and learning, with the aim of supporting evidence-informed educational policies and practices.
The chapter, entitled Doctoral Education: Influences of Global Drivers and Structural Frameworks, examines contemporary transformations in doctoral education by exploring the interplay between global developments, national and supranational policy frameworks, and institutional practices. Based on a systematic review of 282 peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024, the authors identify emerging trends, including the growing emphasis on employability, structured doctoral programmes, partnerships with non-academic sectors, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The analysis also reveals significant imbalances and research gaps, particularly the concentration of studies in high-income countries and STEM fields, alongside limited attention to doctoral supervision, well-being, funding models, and underrepresented geographical contexts. The chapter highlights the importance of balancing global pressures for transformation with academic autonomy, diverse career pathways, and the development of more inclusive and socially responsive doctoral education.
