Cristina Sin, co-authored with Orlanda Tavares and Joyce Aguiar, on the innovative strategies adopted by some lesser-known Portuguese institutions abroad to promote the integration of international students.
Some of Portugal's lesser-known higher education institutions, often overlooked by domestic students, are attracting an increasing number of international students, particularly from Portuguese-speaking countries. These institutions stand out not for their rankings or research reputation, but for their innovative approaches to student integration. With a focus on creating vibrant, multicultural campuses, they go beyond traditional support services to foster a sense of belonging, community engagement, and personal care, providing a more welcoming environment for international students. These institutions embrace multicultural events, student-led initiatives, and religious freedom, making it easier for students to engage in cross-cultural interactions.
One notable example comes from a rural polytechnic, where international students exchange community service for accommodation, such as leading exercise classes or offering nursing services. This initiative not only benefits the students but also strengthens their ties to the local community, transforming the university’s residences into community hubs. These smaller institutions, often without the resources or prestige of larger universities, have successfully turned their challenges into strengths by offering personalized care, strong community bonds, and a genuine sense of belonging, which has led to higher levels of satisfaction among international students. This model may provide a valuable blueprint for other institutions seeking to attract international students, focusing on integration, care, and community.
