Experiences of popular education: an account from Porto of the democratic transition

On October 27th 2022 took place the first colloquium of the Cycle 25 de Abril 50 Anos: Olhar o Passado, Pensar o Futuro, of the Observatory of Education and Training Policies (CeiED-U.Lusófona and CES-U.Coimbra). Hosted by the Aljube Museum of Resistance and Freedom and facilitated by Inês Vieira (Op.Edu/CeiED), in this first meeting we talked about “Experiences of Popular Education: The Study Centre Education and Culture” (C.E.E.C., Porto) with José Ferreira, member of C.E.E.C. during the democratic transition period.

The conversation focused on the origin of the C.E.E.C. and its restructuring after the 25th April Revolution, the proposals that guided this organisation, the discussions and achievements, especially in terms of educational proposals, the involvement in residents’ and workers’ committees, the impact of the 25th November 1975, and the end of the Centre. José Ferreira’s memories were illustrated by posters, stickers, bulletins, C.E.E.C. newspapers, news articles and educational reflections from this organisation. This documentation was collected by Ferreira himself from the Ephemera archive, the Oporto Municipal Public Library, the Sophia de Mello Breyner Municipal Archive (Vila Nova de Gaia) and the Lisbon Municipal Hemeroteca, in dialogue with other elements that were active within the C.E.E.C..

The event was attended by the directors of the Aljube Museum, CeiED and Op.Edu, as well as by researchers and Bachelor students in Education Sciences – Social Education, with the support of Henrique Godoy (doctoral student in Sociomuseology U.Lusófona) in the organization.
