FCT Launches First FCT-Tenure Competition to Hire up to 1000 PhD Researchers in Permanent Positions
9 november 2023

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) has announced the opening of the first edition of the FCT-Tenure Competition, an innovative funding program designed to promote the hiring of PhDs in permanent positions. The main aim of this competition is to stabilize the careers of researchers and promote an attractive and sustainable career horizon for those who are in the early stages of their professional careers.
In this inaugural edition, the program is offering up to 1,000 positions, with the possibility of opening another 400 positions in the 2025 edition. The call is open to institutions in the National Science and Technology System (SNCT), allowing applications to support the opening of international competitions for career positions.
FCT-Tenure will operate on a co-funding model, making it possible to integrate doctoral graduates into both research and teaching careers. During the support period, those hired will be able to devote up to 4 hours a week to teaching activities. Funding will be for up to three years for positions in the teaching career and up to six years for positions in the research career, covering two thirds of salary costs in the first three years for both careers, and one third in the second three years for the research career.
Applications for the first edition of the competition will open on December 18, 2023.
