Inclusion of Brazilian Migrant Students in Portuguese Schools and Linguistic Literacy

On July 21, 2022, the doctoral student in integrated education at CeiED, Alexandra Quadro Siqueira, presented a communication entitled “Inclusion of Brazilian migrant students, in Portuguese schools, and Linguistic Literacy”, at the event I International Congress on Migration and Diaspora Brazilian Academic (CIMDAB’2022), which took place at the Casa do Conhecimento of the University of Minho, Campus de Azurém, in Guimarães, Portugal.

CIMDAB’2022 aimed to promote a space for the dissemination of knowledge, for the exchange of knowledge and experiences, which contribute to deepening both scientific and critical reflection on the subject, as well as the debate on dynamics, processes, methods, strategies and policies related to human mobility, migrations and Brazilian academic diaspora. All this in order to establish intercultural relations in the contemporary world, in a national and international context, favoring the implementation and development of research and development (R&D) in this domain.

Language literacy is considered the ability to master language in all its dimensions and use language knowledge in everyday life. Therefore, it goes far beyond the ability to read and write, which is sometimes performed as a mechanical activity, limited to encoding/decoding words. Now, if Brazilian migrant students speak, read and write Portuguese and, as Portuguese speakers, are not entitled to the Portuguese language for foreigners, under Decree-Law nº 54/2018, (Establishes the legal regime for inclusive education), in schools in Portugal, but is their linguistic literacy sufficient to access and appropriate the curriculum in Portuguese schools? For now, we aim, through the aforementioned study, to identify the contributions of linguistic literacy to the inclusion of Brazilian migrant students in Portugal, through an integrative review of the literature of Portuguese publications, from the last five years, which will lead to the construction of a Matrix of the Results by Contributions of Linguistic Literacy for the inclusion of Brazilian students.
