Patrícia Ferraz de Matos, a researcher at CeiED, Lusófona University, organised the dossier “Violence against women (LGBTQIAPN+): representations, discrimination and responses in Brazil and Portugal” for the prestigious journal Etnográfica, together with Raphaella Pereira dos Santos Câmara of the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon. Etnográfica: Revista do Centro em Rede de Investigação em Antropologia is a journal indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, and has an A1 rating in the CAPES Qualis index in Brazil.

The organisers of the dossier previously coordinated the panel “Violence against women: representations (current and/or historical), examples of discrimination (gender-based and other forms of hatred), and responses (state-led and social)” for the International Conference on Women, Gender and Intersectionality in the Lusophone World. This conference was organised by the Lusophone Studies Association (an interdisciplinary scientific association based in Canada) and took place in 2022 at the University of the Azores in Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel.

The results presented are from research funded by projects in Portugal and Brazil. The authors are researchers integrated into independent research groups in Portugal (the Research Group “Diversities: Ethnographies in the Contemporary World” – Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon; the Treatment Activism Group [GAT], Lisbon; and the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development [CeiEd], Lusófona University) and in Brazil (Culture, Identity and Symbolic Representations [CIRS] – UFRN; the Interdisciplinary Center for Studies in Sexual Diversity, Gender and Human Rights [Tirésias] – UFRN; and the Center for Studies and Research in the Anthropology of Health [NuAnts] – UFRN].

Some of the works presented in the referred panel were selected for transformation into articles and integration into the now-published dossier, which includes an Introduction and four articles to which twelve authors contributed: Francisco Cleiton Vieira, Joana Canêdo, Teresa Melo, M. L. Salazar, J. Salvador, M. Ferreira, R. Costa, Marcos Moura, Natália Cristina Castelo Branco, Patrícia Ferraz de Matos, Raphaella Pereira dos Santos Câmara, and Juliana G. Melo.

This dossier focuses on violence against the LGBTQIAPN+ population. Based on ethnographic data collection, interviews and direct and/or participant observation, it contributes to our understanding of the problems these individuals face and the support available to them, including social, psychological, legal and health support.

With a focus on contexts in Brazil and Portugal, this publication is available via open access (https://journals.openedition.org/etnografica/21074) and reinforces the presence of CeiED and Lusófona University in international collaboration and research networks.
