New article by researchers Orlanda Tavares and Cristina Sin

Researchers Orlanda Tavares and Cristina Sin are co-authors of the article "Towards a democratic and fair society: Civic competences of Brazilian graduates. Education, Citizenship and Social Justice", which has just been published in SAGE Journals.

Summary:

This article analyzes whether Brazilian graduates feel they have developed civic competences (ethics, critical thinking and respect for diversity) during their higher education courses. The analysis takes into account official data from 2014, 2015 and 2016 from the National Student Performance Exam (Enade). The results show that students from higher socio-economic backgrounds tend to concentrate on courses that offer positions of greater prestige and power in society. Interestingly, it is these students who think that their degree has contributed to the development of the aforementioned civic competences to a lesser degree than their peers from lower socio-economic backgrounds. These skills are particularly critical for privileged students who will be better placed professionally to tackle social injustices.
