Publication of an opinion piece in Público by Professor Vítor Teodoro

14 february 2023

An opinion piece by Professor Vítor Teodoro (CeiED) was published in Público on February 14, in which he discusses the change in the rules for access to higher education and the completion of secondary education in Portugal.

Noting that in subjects where there are no national exams, classifications tend to be very high, which is not the case in subjects with national exams, Vítor Teodoro presents several possible solutions to minimize injustices and improve the quality and equity of education, such as: distinguishing the completion of secondary education from access to higher education, including the results of national exams in the secondary school diploma, making modifications to exams to improve assessment, requiring all students applying to higher education in Portugal to take the national exams in Portugal, combining internal grades and external exam grades, and using random selection of candidates who score above a minimum value, which could include criteria that promote socio-economic diversity in selective courses.
