ReMASE Project: Phase I concluded

The 18-month Research Methods in Advanced Studies in Education (ReMASE) project funded by fct aims to identify and enunciate research-based principles and guidelines for improving the teaching of research methodologies in Education and is organised in three working phases. Phase I is concerned with mapping the field (theoretical and empirical). Phase II is the time for data collection and analysis (survey-questionnaire followed by focus-group interviews). Phase III takes the results of the theoretical mapping and the empirical results to produce a framework – constituted by principles and correspondent guidelines – for the design of research methods courses.

The first of three work phases is completed. This was possible after six months of literature review and empirical information gathering done by the thirteen researchers in this project. The main results achieved were presented by members of the Project Management Committee of the ReMASE project, João Filipe Matos (PI), Elsa Estrela (CoPI) and André Freitas (research assistant) in two international congresses and in two nacional congresses.

The ReMASE project participated in the 1st International Conference on Education and Training: thinking education in transition times, on July 14 at the Institute of Education of the Lisbon University. The presentation entitled ‘Research Methods in Advanced Studies in Education: trends and pitfalls’ aimed to disseminate a synthesis of the interpretation of the literature review on the teaching of research methodologies in education, as well as first impressions of the results of the research methodologies in education curricular units in Masters courses and Doctoral programs in education and/or in teaching, of all higher education institutions in Portugal.

The 12th CeiED Researchers Meeting was also an opportunity for the ReMASE Project to disseminate results of work already developed. The presentation aimed to mirror the project methodological design and how it was operationalized. Under the title ‘Towards a pedagogical culture of teaching research methodologies in education: the consolidation of an investigative culture’, the different steps adopted from three problematic areas were covered: consent and ethical validation; items and guidelines; pilot, application and analysis.

More recently, on July 21, the ReMASE project participated in the 3rd Porto International Conference on Research in Education, which took place at the Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico do Porto. The communication that guided the participation focused on initial teacher education/ training, through data from the project on masters’ courses in teaching. The title of the presentation was ‘Pedagogic culture of research in teacher education programs: revealing implications of research methodologies courses’ in research-teaching nexus’. The implications that research methodologies courses in education may have in structuring and defining the research-teaching nexus in initial teacher education processes were discussed.

More recently, on 15, 16 and 17 September, the ReMASE project participated in the XVI Congress of the Portuguese Society for Education Sciences, which took place in Escola Superior de Educação at Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa. This communication was entitled ‘Teaching research methodologies in education in a data-intensive society’, framed within the theme ‘Policies and practices in higher education’. The discussion focused on the reliability of data, based on the validity of the information collected, promoting reflection on methodological and epistemological procedures of scientific research.

The research work of the ReMASE project continues and can be followed here. For further information you can contact through the e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
