Report of the International Commission on the Futures of Education

The Report of the International Commission on the Futures of Education, in its Portuguese version, can be read in full here.
The International Commission on the Futures of Education was established by UNESCO in 2019, with the aim of reimagining how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet. The initiative, which has seen broad engagement from civil society and experts, aims to leverage a broad debate on how Education should be rethought in a world characterised by increasing complexity, uncertainty and fragility.
The Report emphasises the role of Education to bring about profound changes and its transformative potential in the design of sustainable collective futures. For this to happen, it argues, a new social contract for education will be needed that can redress injustices while transforming the future. This new social contract must be grounded in human rights and based on principles of non-discrimination, social justice, respect for life, human dignity and cultural diversity. It should embrace an ethic of care, reciprocity and solidarity. It should strengthen education as a public endeavour and a common good.
This Report, elaborated over two years and based on a global consultation process – involving around one million people – invites governments
institutions, organizations and citizens from around the world to devise a new social contract for education that helps build peaceful, just and sustainable futures for all.
