Research Practice in the Master’s Degree in Cognitive Science and Education

On the 16th of January, the students of the Master’s Degree in Cognitive Science and Education visited the laboratory of the School of Psychology and Life Sciences of the Lusófona University during the class of the UC Brain, Mind and Education taught by Professors Jorge Oliveira and Lucimar Dantas. The visit is part of the connection between teaching and research present in the MCCE and, in this specific case, in the research project A língua que habito, o mundo que construo: ensino de língua portuguesa e desenvolvimento de competências em países da comunidade lusófona (PE-CEIED-3/001/2022).
The purpose of the visit to the laboratory was to learn about and participate in an experimental task using electroencephalography (EEG) on the impact of verbal and non-verbal language on interpretation brain activity. In the occasion, the students received information about the technique used and actively participated in the task, in order to initiate themselves in the practices of interdisciplinary research between Education and Neuroscience that is practiced and expected from the students of this course.
The EEG task is developed in complementarity with a study with data from an educational context on Critical Thinking, in which students from Secondary Education in Angola, Brazil and Portugal participated, and which assesses the cognitive activities of interpretation, analysis, explanation, evaluation and synthesis involved in critical thinking.
