18 march 2025
A recent webinar focused on the revision of the Legal Framework for Higher Education Institutions (RJIES), a key topic for the future of higher education in Portugal.
Since its approval in 2007, the RJIES has shaped the regulation and functioning of higher education institutions, and the revision proposal presented by the Government in December 2024 introduces significant changes.
The event was moderated by CeiED researcher Cristina Sin, who opened the session with an overview of the main proposed changes. Professor João Cunha Serra, a member of the commission responsible for the 2023 RJIES evaluation, shared his perspective on the proposed changes and their potential impacts.
During the debate, participants highlighted the need for a more flexible university governance model, the importance of institutional autonomy, and the challenges posed by a sustainable funding system. They also discussed the role of institutions in promoting interdisciplinarity and internationalization, as well as their adaptation to new dynamics in education and research.
This webinar provided a space for reflection and analysis for academics, students, and other stakeholders interested in the future of higher education in Portugal, reinforcing the importance of a broad discussion on the RJIES revision and its implications.
