Workshop “Teachers’ Trade Unionism: from its origins to the diversity of organizations and projects

The constitution of representative associations of teachers marks decisively, in different historical moments, the very process of construction of the teaching profession. This was the case in the 19th century, at the beginning of the 20th century, or in the 1970s with the creation of what is now the teachers’ trade union movement. This workshop, composed by two sessions, intends to interrogate this process and launch clues of understanding for the current struggles (and its forms of expression) of teachers; and to challenge the development of lines of research that advance knowledge in this field of study so abandoned by the Social Sciences of Education (and Labour).
The Workshop will be facilitated by Professor António Teodoro.
António Teodoro is a Professor of Sociology of Education and Comparative Education, Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Education and Development (CeiED) and Director of the Institute of Education at the Lusófona University. In 1974, he was one of the young military men who put an end to one of the dictatorships that shamed Europe, thus allowing the democratisation of Portugal and the independence of its African colonies. At the same time, he actively participated in the democratisation of education, first as Chief Inspector of Primary Education, then as leader (and co-founder) of the largest teachers’ union for almost two decades. In this capacity, António Teodoro was one of the crucial pillars in building the consensus (even if built on the basis of a healthy conflict of projects) that exists in the Portuguese society on the democratic values of the public school, the role of teachers and the autonomy of schools and universities, the importance of science for the development of the country.
The registration, free and compulsory, with a limited number of places, is unique for the workshop that will take place on two dates. (Register here.)
