Patrícia Ferraz de Matos

Patrícia Ferraz de Matos is an Integrated Researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Education and Development Studies (CeiED) at Lusófona University since 2026, within the framework of the FCT Institutional Call to Stimulate Scientific Employment (CEEC). She was an Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS), University of Lisbon (ULisboa) (2013–2025), and is a member of the teaching staff of the PhD Programme in Anthropology at ULisboa since 2013. She collaborates with several Portuguese and international universities at undergraduate and postgraduate level and has supervised numerous theses.

She graduated in Anthropology (pre-Bologna) from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra (1997), and completed a Master’s (2005) and PhD (2012) in Social Sciences, specialising in Social and Cultural Anthropology, both at ICS-ULisboa.

She is the author of As Côres do Império: Representações Raciais no Império Colonial Português (Victor de Sá Prize, 2005), published by Imprensa de Ciências Sociais (2006, 2012) and Berghahn Books (2013), and Anthropology, Nationalism and Colonialism: Mendes Correia and the Porto School of Anthropology (Berghahn Books, 2023; paperback 2026). She edited, with Livio Sansone (UFBA), Decolonizing Europe: Ethnographies of National and Transnational Projects (Berghahn Books, 2026).

She is an Associate Editor of the Anthropological Journal of European Cultures (2020–present), Coordinator of the Europeanist Network of the EASA (2020–2026), Deputy Director of Análise Social (2021–2026), and since 2025 is Secretary-Elect of the Society for the Anthropology of Europe (SAE, American Anthropological Association). She is a member of the Scientific Council of CeiED and, since 2019, is the corresponding member in Portugal of HOAN (History of Anthropology Network, EASA).

Her authorship of and participation in several research projects is also noteworthy, as is her collaboration in initiatives aimed at broad audiences.
