Since 2013, Lauren has been an Associate Professor at the Institute of International and Comparative Education at Beijing Normal University. She served as the Immediate Past Secretary General of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES) (2016-2019), Deputy Director of the Paulo Freire Institute, UCLA (2018-2022), and Co-Founder and Member of the International Network on Gender, Social Justice, and Praxis. She was a Fulbright scholar from the UK, managed the national program for the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and was a sustainable development fellow in Nicaragua.

She holds a Bachelor's degree in Hispanic Studies and Sociology from the College of William & Mary (Virginia, USA), and a Master's and Ph.D. (2009) in Social Sciences and Comparative Education from UCLA. She professionally uses her middle name, Ila, to honour her grandmother from Appalachia (a cultural region of the United States), who was an educator.

Throughout her life, she has been involved in intergenerational, intersectional, and interdisciplinary social justice work in various contexts and languages. Her academic activism and interests are broad and interconnected, many influenced by nearly two decades of studying Paulo Freire.
