Synopsis – [Textbooks and Youth: Boredom or Curiosity for Knowledge?] There is no justification for knowledge (largely embodied in textbooks) to constitute a heavy and hated burden on the backs of our children and youth. Knowledge can be lighter and looked upon with pleasure, even without forgetting that pleasure does not mean idleness, but something to be achieved through hard work. Lighter, yes, if the first principle of organizing a textbook (or, in general, any teaching strategy) is to teach "to use the mind well," and the second principle is "less can be more" (that is, fewer contents but in depth), as proposed by the "Coalition of Essential Schools" in the USA? Or, in the French tradition, if these two principles correspond to one, that of seeking to lead students to have "a well-organized mind and not just full," as proposed by Freinet in the footsteps of Montaigne?

Synopsis – [School in Times of Crisis: Problems, Challenges, and Perspectives]. "Education is a matter for everyone." This statement means that political dialogue constitutes an increasingly important axis for the management and development of educational systems. This is how we understand it, and this is how UNESCO understands it.
Since it is impossible to "govern by decree," it has also become evident that education, in order to achieve the goals of Education for All, cannot be the responsibility of a single Ministry, but rather of the entire government and administration, as well as of the entire civil society, requiring the joint and concerted action of an increasing number of partners. With this same objective in mind, we held a Meeting in 2012 - "Education Partners Meeting: issues, challenges, and perspectives" - which took place at CES facilities in Lisbon, with the participation of national partners and other educational stakeholders. It is with the intention of valuing democratic participation in educational life and with the aim of highlighting the need for everyone to be involved in the difficult situation we find ourselves in, that the first formal publication of OP:EDU is being released.

Synopsis – [Comparative Education Beyond Numbers: Local Contexts, National Realities, and Transnational Processes]. The school (formal education institution) is not meant to play the role of redeemer of society. However, undoubtedly, its social role is strategic for any model of society, including the struggle for a more equal and fair society. According to Saviani (2008), truly revolutionary pedagogy is critical, and because it is critical, it knows it is truly conditioned. It is not the main determinant of society, but it is secondary and therefore decisive. In this sense, Freire's (2005) conception is added to this idea, which believes in a school education that liberates, politicizes, and builds. Through a quality educational system, the history of a nation, the story of a people can be transformed.

Synopsis – Every book has a story. This collective work has its own, as is only to be expected. It was born out of the criticism levelled by Carlos Alberto Torres, who, as member of the External Monitoring and Advisory Committee of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Education and Development (CeiED), called our attention to the limited knowledge each of us has on the work, scientific concerns, theoretical frameworks used by everyone else in the unit. Accepting this critical observation, it was then decided, along with other options, to edit two collections of a selection of papers, both in Portuguese and English, published by the CeiED researchers in the period between 2013 and 2017.
