Synopsis – [The Republican Imperative Under Debate].
Republicanism gives us the possibility to savor time in a different way. As time passed, republicanism created. With it, the filling of time gained existential meaning, making reality blend with dreams. With it, the will for the future was born, turbulent for sure, but with the desire to bring about existence, to make things be in a different way, flowing in search of a new course. Republicanism was a process with ontological roots. Much changed with time, and much remained in time. It is true that everything could have been different, but we cannot reverse the course of what happened, relive it, geometrically perfecting what went wrong, erasing mistakes, and eternalizing potentialities. But we can, in another time, in our time, celebrate the value of dialogue, learning and reflecting on what happened in another space-time. Republicanism is a sea of currents and ripples. The important thing is that all these sensitivities have the possibility of teaching us to be future-oriented. The book presented here gathers some voices and perspectives on the First Republic, a foundational period in our national history, as part of the celebrations of the Centenary of the Portuguese Republic.
