25 march 2025
The recent publication of the article Teachers’ professional development within art experiences: Pedagogical narratives for hopeful educational futures by André Freitas is featured as the guest authors’ perspectives section of the Reparative Futures of Education Resource Centre at the Department of Education, University of Oxford (UK).
Reparative Futures of Education, led by Arathi Sriprakash (Professor of Sociology and Education at the University of Oxford), is funded by the ERC/UKRI and aims to explore ideas that contribute to reparative and representational justice in schools, reflecting on possible futures for education.
The published resource, titled Teacher’s Imaginations for Just Educational Futures, focuses on the narrative of Kleber, a visual arts teacher in the early years of education at a public school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It presents his story and discusses material, symbolic, epistemic, and affective practices within the school, where imagination becomes a means of addressing historical inequalities and building more just educational futures. Through Kleber’s narrative, the piece explores the possibility of incorporating a reparative pedagogy in schools - acknowledging past injustices and striving to transform their enduring impact on education.
