Reinventing Museology – The role of contemporary art

During October 6 and 7, 2022 took place the Conference integrated in the Saison Croisée France-Portugal 2022 and organized by FMSH PARIS Paris (Fondation Maison Science de l’Homme) and Lusófona University, Lisbon (CeiED and the Museology Department).

Participants in this Conference were Professor Constança Vasconcelos (Department of Education in Visual Arts, Ceied), Professor Inês Marques (Department of Education in Visual Arts and Hei-Lab), Professor Mario Moutinho, Maria Luisa Moita and Marta Jecu.

The aim of the conference was to study the interference of these movements with similar critiques and attempts at innovation in disciplinary museology that had important implications for promoting decolonial thinking, allowing for multiple narratives, including secondary objects and marginalized histories in the museological narrative and expanding the identity of the heritage object with an ephemeral dimension.

The questions discussed were:

  • How did conceptual art contribute in time to rethinking the museum as a (social and cultural) practice?
  • How the institutional critique that eventually reformed the art museum was conceived?

Keynote speaker Mário Moutinho introduced the audience to the principles of socio museology, which includes immediate social reality in museum practice and advocates museology as a social intervention. The second keynote speaker Sara Alonso Gomez focused on the fundamental principles of resistance within the art institution, also promoting social awareness in the field of contemporary art.

The lecture presented was of a multidisciplinary nature, ranging from anthropology, to social sciences, education sciences, design, performance studies, aesthetics. The debates developed during the conference sought a point of reflection on the discipline of museology, considering the conjunctions between these changes towards a decolonial and social museology.

In the framework of the Project Seed Ilind 2022 , in which this conference was integrated, a publication including the conference proceedings, related articles by conference participants and other invited authors, interviews and artistic portfolios will be published in 2022-2023.
