Cátia Severino

Cátia Severino is an Integrated Researcher at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development (CeiED), Universidade Lusófona. She holds a PhD in Portuguese Linguistics from the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, where her doctoral thesis focused on the perception of prosody in the acquisition of European Portuguese.

Her research focuses on language acquisition and development, with particular interest in the role of prosody and intonation in early language processing and in the relationship between language, cognition, and learning. Her work combines experimental linguistics with research on language development and communication, drawing on a range of experimental methodologies, including behavioural methods, eye-tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), and ultrasound imaging of speech articulation. She has experience conducting research with infants, children, and adults, including typically and atypically developing populations, as well as in the design, implementation, and coordination of experimental studies in laboratory settings.

Her current research interests include the relationship between language and learning, language-mediated cognitive processes, critical thinking and educational development, and the use of experimental methodologies to investigate learning processes. She has participated in several funded research projects and contributed to the adaptation and validation of language and developmental assessment tools for European Portuguese. Her work has resulted in publications in international peer-reviewed journals, including First Language, IBRO Neuroscience Reports, International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders, Brain Sciences, and Frontiers in Psychology.
