Maria João Horta is a Science teacher at both Basic and Secondary Education levels, holding a Master's degree in Science Didactics and a PhD in ICT and Education. She was a member of the Working Group tasked with defining the “Profile of Students at the End of Compulsory Education”, published in 2017. She served as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the European Schoolnet until October 2025 and participated in working groups of the European Commission and European Schoolnet in the fields of Digital Education and Digital Citizenship. She also represented Portugal in the OECD project “Strength through Diversity: Education for Inclusive Societies”. She has served as Commissioner of the National Early Childhood Intervention System and held the position of Deputy Director-General at the Directorate-General for Education.
