Four cities host national debate on the 40th anniversary of the Framework Law of the Education System
Seminar promoted by Lusófona, Madeira and Évora Universities receives the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic
Lisbon, Funchal, Évora and Porto will host, in October 2026, the national seminar “40 years of the Framework Law of the Education System: between legacy and possible futures”. The initiative, which has the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic, aims to bring together researchers, teachers, students, policymakers, educational leaders and representatives of civil society for a plural debate on the trajectory and future of education in Portugal.
Promoted by CeiED — Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development, of Lusófona University, by CIE-UMa — Research Centre for Education, of the University of Madeira, and by CIEP — Centre for Research in Education and Psychology, of the University of Évora, the seminar marks four decades since the approval of the legislation that structured the democratization of education and consolidated the construction of the democratic public school.

A PROGRAMME FOCUSED ON THE CHALLENGES OF EDUCATION
The four meetings are organized around eight panels with invited speakers:
- Weaving the common: the democratic promise of education
- Recognizing those who educate: professional status, training and the educational community
- Paths without walls: continuity and justice in compulsory schooling
- Knowledge for the common: curriculum, culture and possible futures
- The whole university: diversity, mission and future
- From school to work: knowledge, qualifications and social justice
- Geographies of possibility: autonomy, regionalization and European integration
- Architectures of education: governance, autonomy and regulation of the system
The seminar will feature some of the most recognized figures in the Portuguese educational field, alongside many other academics, education professionals and policymakers. In Lisbon, the seminar welcomes proposals for scientific papers addressing the 40th anniversary of the Framework Law of the Education System and contemporary technological, social and cultural challenges.
