47th aniversary of the 25th of April

This Sunday marks the 47th anniversary of the April 25th Revolution, also known as the Carnation Revolution. CeiED commemorates this day by recalling banned books and intervention songs. During the period from 1933 to 1974, following the publication of Decree No. 22 469, instituting censorship of books, the publication of around 900 titles were forbidden.

One of the books banned during this period was Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1972). See the presentation with other examples of prohibited books during Estado Novo, or see the full list here.

CeiED also suggests a list of intervention songs to listen on this day and encourages researchers to add their own musical suggestions here.

Celebrate the 47th anniversary of April 25 by rereading and recalling some of the works of Portuguese-speaking authors.
