Lorena Carvalho Participates in the Education Committee of the Federal Senate

Lorena Carvalho, a CeiED research trainee and UNESCO Education Project Officer for Brazil, attended the launch of the Global Campaign for Public Education on December 9 at the Education and Culture Committee (CE).

During the event, Lorena highlighted that education funding is one of the main bottlenecks preventing populations in less developed countries from having guaranteed access to public education.

UNESCO and the World Bank maintain an Observatory on Education Financing. Data from 2022 reveals that the primary obstacle to expanding access to quality education worldwide lies in the lack of funding. Middle- and low-income countries spend approximately $55 per student, compared to an average of $8,300 per student in high-income countries.

According to Lorena Carvalho, the heavy burden of public debt in these countries is closely tied to the low investment in public education. The greater the public debt, the lower the investment in education.
